Sugar Babies

I tend to tabulate and calculate everything, the older I get the worse I get, or better depending on how you look at it! It is a trait that keeps the family in the loop of my wicked little revelations, keeping discussions open and perhaps eye opening. I can not help it, it is an illness where I look at things and instantly start calculation and crunching the numbers. I am an expert eye-baller always knowing at a glance, how much a particular item will last or how much it will cost for the entire dinner or how many hours hubby would have to work to purchase something.

My family does not always want to hear my findings such as my recent discovery of how much sugar we go through in a months time!  It is easy to not pay attention to small things like this when you buy small bags throughout the month. However this month was a bulk purchase of sugar, kind of easy to keep track of! We purchased a 25 pound bag and my aunt brought a 10 pound bag and guess what?

We will be out of sugar at the end of the month, a whopping 35 pounds of sugar and I did not even do hardly any baking this month! Most the baking that occurred was my daughter making all the MIXES that my aunt brought that are already sweetened.

35 pounds of sugar a month comes to 420 POUNDS a YEAR and could be as high as 450 pounds given the fact that some months we bake quite a bit!

It could very easily hit 500 pounds in one year if you add making jelly, jams and wine to the mix!

500 pounds of White Re-fined sugar in ONE YEAR is DISGUSTING! EWWWWWWWWWWWW! YUCKY!

How is that for gross? That comes to 100 pounds of sugar PER PERSON!

  1. OMG!! It take me FOREVER to get through a 5 pound bag. Like 6 months. What on earth are you using sugar in when you didn't bake or make jelly? I use a big spoonful in my coffee every morning and that's it.

  2. I have NO CLUE! I did make muffins twice, but I did not have to make any syrups or anything this month. My husband is bad having three heaping teaspoons in his coffee and I have one or two depending on time of day. We make 3 pots of coffee a day so quite a bit of coffee. My kids have sugar on their oatmeal. I also made cornbread several times although only a little sugar goes into that.

    But I am looking at this and am totally baffled as it was a low baking month. GROSS and something that needs a lot of work apparently!

  3. Ouch! That is a lot of sugar. We hardly use any sugar here either. 5 pound bag lasts us forever. But when I bake bread exclusively, I go throw a pound or two a month.

  4. Oh man it is worse than I thought then! You ladies made me feel so much worse than I already did (which waa bad!) LOL well like I said, definatly something we will have to work on!

  5. We buy sugar in bulk as well, from what I have read the average sugar per person is 30 pounds a year but it's much higher at our house since I do so much canning. Maybe someone hide a bag or two on you! Ha

  6. I don't make things from scratch often, and my husband only uses one or two tablespoons per day, depending on how much coffe he drinks. So a five pound bag of sugar lasts us three months. But I know for a fact that we eat a lot more sugar than that in processed foods!

  7. People do eat a lot of added sugar to foods... I eat a whole diet but I do add sugar to my coffee... that's the only source of sugar for me. I buy 2 lb bags of sugar for bread & baking and it usually lasts a couple months.
